How Does CBD Work?

The human endocannabinoid system, also known as ECS, is to thank for both CBD and THC’s impact on our bodies and minds; unfortunately, it is a system that we still have much to learn about. Both THC and CBD have been found to interact with cannabinoid receptors our ECS while helping to regulate various physiological and cognitive processes.

Research on the effects of cannabis, including its chemical components, led to the discovery of a biochemical communication system, spanning our entire nervous system. Think of your ECS as part of your neurotransmitter system, which is the network of pathways that allows the nerves in your body to communicate and work together efficiently. The ECS is composed of endocannabinoids; molecules that bind to cannabinoid receptors; as well as cannabinoid receptor proteins found throughout the mammalian central nervous system and peripheral systems. CBD and Your Endocannabinoid System

All cannabinoids, including CBD, produce effects in the body by attaching to receptors called endocannabinoid receptors. Though research is still emergent as to how many CB receptors we have in the human body, we do know that we are able to produce certain cannabinoids on our own. Currently, scientists have identified as least two receptors for cannabinoids, called the CB1 receptors and CB2 receptors.

CB1 receptors have been found throughout the body, but many are concentrated in the brain. These CB1 receptors in our brains are responsible for helping with coordination, movement, pain, emotions and mood, thinking, appetite, and memory, among others functions. THC attaches effectively to these receptors, often eliciting the head or body ‘high’ associated with cannabis consumption.

CB2 receptors which affect inflammation and pain, are more commonly found in our immune system, with the greatest density of receptors found in the spleen. While researchers once believed that CBD attached to these CB2 receptors, emerging studies indicate that instead of attaching directly to either receptor, CBD seems to direct the body to use and create more of its own cannabinoids. This is because while CBD has little binding affinity for the CB1 and CB2 receptors, scientists have found that several serotonin receptor subtypes called 5HT receptors, are the actual docking sites for CBD into the body.

In 2005, it was found that CBD interacts directly with 5HTA2 and other 5-HT receptors is another sign pointing at a broader relationship between the endocannabinoid and serotonergic systems we’ve yet to uncover. Already we know there is considerable communication between the two neurotransmitter systems, which are also involved in similar physiological functions throughout the body, including anxiety and stress relief, the reduction of pain, the regulation of internal temperature, and the alleviation of nausea and headaches, among others.
